Ashayir

"Clans" - one side and the other

What do you know about Arab clans in Essen? Immerse yourself in the captivating documentary "Ashayir", which tells the story of Lebanese immigrants. Originally fleeing from Mardin, Turkey, to escape political persecution and poverty, they were later forced to flee again due to the war in Lebanon. The film provides insights into the lives of Lebanese people, their dreams and the challenges they face, from tolerance to stigmatization.

Monika Rintelen's late husband Arno Pilger was an AWO social worker who looked after people like Diana Siala's grandparents, with whom she is now setting out to discover Lebanese culture. On their trip to Mardin, both are looking for the house of Diana's great-grandfather. "Ashayir" is a moving film that sensitively portrays the poignant story and dreams of the Lebanese. It becomes clear that there is more than one perspective on the subject of clans. Monika Rintelen and Hamid Merhi's very personal documentary suggests the power of kindness as a solution.
